Different cockroach species have different habits and preferred conditions. The Nevada Department of Agriculture identifies German, American, Oriental, and brown-banded cockroaches among the species of importance in Nevada.
German cockroaches are generally about 1/2 inch long and range from tan to almost black. They are the most common cockroach species in Nevada and are often associated with indoor infestations.
The American cockroach is bigger and grows to approximately 1.5 inches in size. It is a reddish-brown cockroach and lives mostly outdoors but can be seen entering buildings in search of moisture.
Oriental cockroaches have black, glossy bodies, with an average body length of one inch. They like wet environments and can get into buildings from the outside environment.
Brown-banded cockroaches are tan to light brown and about 1/2 inch or smaller. They prefer warm, dry locations and may be found away from the moisture sources favored by some other species.
Knowing which species is present helps narrow down where to look and which conditions need attention.
