Las Vegas Mosquitoes: Causes, Risks & Prevention Tips

why are mosquitoes so bad in Las Vegas

When you think about Las Vegas, you probably picture hot, dry weather and very limited water. With so little water around, you would not expect mosquitoes to be a big problem here, right? So, you may be surprised to see mosquitoes around your home, especially in the warmer months.

But mosquitoes have adapted well to life in the Las Vegas Valley. As temperatures rise, people may notice more mosquitoes around their yards, patios, pools, and other outdoor areas. The hot, dry weather is not the only reason. Water from sprinklers, pools, plants, and watering systems can give mosquitoes a place to lay their eggs.

So, even though Las Vegas is dry, mosquitoes can still find what they need to live and grow. And knowing where they come from and what they need can help you keep them away from your home. Let’s look at why mosquitoes are common in Las Vegas, the risks they can cause, and how you can prevent them around your home.

Why Are Mosquitoes Common in Las Vegas?

1 The desert does not mean there is no water

Las Vegas has a dry climate, but homes and businesses bring water into the environment through irrigation systems, swimming pools, fountains, sprinklers, and landscaping. Even a small amount of standing water can give mosquitoes a place to lay eggs. Plant saucers, buckets, toys, clogged drains, and areas where irrigation water collects can all become breeding spots.

The Southern Nevada Health District recommends removing standing water around your home because it can give mosquitoes a place to breed.

2 Irrigation creates small wet areas

Many Las Vegas homes use drip irrigation to keep plants and landscaping alive. While this helps save water, but a leaking or broken line can create small wet areas around the property. You may not even notice these spots at first. Water can collect under rocks, near plants, beside walls, or around outdoor fixtures. These small areas can stay damp enough for mosquitoes to breed.

This is one reason understanding the connection between the Las Vegas climate and pest control is important. A dry climate can still have small pockets of moisture where pests grow.

3 Some mosquitoes only need a little water

Not every mosquito needs a pond or large pool of water. Aedes aegypti, a mosquito found in Clark County, can breed in small containers that collect water. These mosquitoes are also known for biting during the day and often target people around their homes. They can breed in items as small as plant saucers, toys, or other containers that hold water.

4 Hotter weather can increase mosquito activity

Mosquitoes are more active when the weather gets warmer. Las Vegas has very hot summers, and rain can create new places for mosquitoes to breed. When water collects after a storm, the warm weather can help mosquitoes develop quickly.

5 Landscaping gives mosquitoes places to hide

Mosquitoes do not want to spend all day in direct desert heat. During hot periods, they often look for shaded and protected areas. Dense plants, shrubs, grass, outdoor furniture, and areas with moisture can give mosquitoes a place to rest during the day. If landscaping is heavily watered or overgrown, it can become even more comfortable for them.

Why You Should Take Mosquitoes Seriously

Most people think of mosquitoes as nothing more than a nuisance, especially when they keep you from enjoying time outside. But a lot of mosquito bites can be more than just annoying. Some mosquitoes can carry diseases, so it is worth taking the problem seriously when you keep seeing them around your home.

You do not need to panic every time you spot a mosquito. However, if you are seeing them often, it is a good idea to check your yard for places where they can stay. Standing water, wet areas, and other small sources of water can quickly turn into mosquito breeding spots.

Simple steps like emptying containers, fixing leaks, and keeping your yard dry can help reduce mosquito activity. If you have tried these steps and mosquitoes are still around, professional pest control in Las Vegas can help find the source of the problem and suggest the right way to deal with it.

What Conditions Do Mosquitoes Need?

Mosquitoes need suitable conditions to complete their life cycle. The most important factor around residential properties is access to water where they can lay their eggs. They can also benefit from shaded areas that provide protection from heat during the day. Dense vegetation, shrubs, grass, outdoor furniture, and areas that remain damp can give adult mosquitoes places to rest.

This is why a property can have mosquito activity even when there is no obvious source of water. Small breeding sites combined with shaded resting areas may be enough to support mosquitoes.

How Can You Prevent Mosquitoes Around Your Home?

You do not need to make big changes to your home to help keep mosquitoes away. A few simple things can make a real difference. The key is to remove the places where mosquitoes can find water and make your outdoor space less comfortable for them.

1 Remove Standing Water

Start with a quick walk around your yard. Check places such as plant saucers, buckets and containers, children’s outdoor toys, pet water bowls, pool covers and other potential places. Empty these items promptly and fix any leaks you find.

2 Keep Your Yard Dry and Clean

Your yard can also play a big part in the number of mosquitoes you see. Overwatered plants, thick bushes, and wet areas can give mosquitoes places to stay and hide. Keep plants and shrubs trimmed where possible, and try not to overwater your yard. Take a look around rocks, walls, plants, and other areas where water may collect. These spots are easy to miss, but they can become a problem if they stay wet. These simple steps can be part of an effective natural mosquito control approach by reducing places where mosquitoes can breed and hide.

3Protect Yourself From Mosquito Bites

Even with a clean yard, mosquitoes may still be around, so it is also important to protect yourself when you are outside. If you are spending time in your yard, wearing long sleeves and loose clothing can help cover your skin. You can also follow EPA guidelines for mosquito bite prevention, such as covering exposed skin and taking simple steps to avoid mosquito bites when spending time outdoors.

4 Know When to Get Professional Help

Sometimes, basic prevention is not enough. You may remove standing water, repair leaks, and maintain your landscaping but continue to see mosquitoes around your property. This can happen when breeding or resting areas are difficult to identify or when mosquitoes are coming from nearby areas.

If mosquito activity continues, professional mosquito control in Las Vegas can help identify the conditions contributing to the problem and determine an appropriate treatment approach.

How Does Professional Mosquito Control Help?

Professional mosquito control can help when mosquitoes keep coming back after you have tried removing standing water and keeping your yard clean. A professional can check your property, find problem areas, and recommend the right treatment.

1 Identify Breeding and Resting Areas

A professional inspection can help find places where mosquitoes may be breeding or hiding. This includes standing water, wet landscaping, irrigation problems, shaded areas, and other spots that are easy to miss. Finding these areas can help explain why mosquitoes keep coming back and where treatment may be needed.

2 Treat Mosquito Activity

After identifying problem areas, professionals can treat mosquito activity around suitable outdoor areas of the property. The treatment approach may vary depending on the property, the level of mosquito activity, and the conditions present. A professional can recommend a treatment plan based on the specific needs of the property rather than using the same approach for every home.

3 Address Conditions That Support Mosquitoes

Professional mosquito control can also help with regular prevention. Removing standing water, fixing leaks, caring for your yard, and keeping areas dry can help keep mosquitoes away. Addressing these conditions can help reduce the factors that contribute to recurring mosquito problems.

Steve was very friendly from the beginning. I had a good feeling about his services, even when we first talked over the phone. I’m very specific about the areas outside my home that are sprayed. I have kids who are always playing outside and have VERY sensitive skin. I told Steve the specific areas I wanted treated. He was understanding and followed my instructions carefully. Also, I didn’t notice any bugs in my garage after Steve treated the area. I can tell he cares about his customer’s being satisfied with his work. I highly recommend him.

Steve and team gave a good price explained what type of service they provide and we are happy with our first application, having the option to call them if we see resurgence between applications is a definitely a peace of mind. We have two kids and a toddler who runs around bare feet even in the backyard so, having EnviroGuard treat our surroundings is well worth it, both environmental impact, limited footprint and safety for our kids.

We hired Enviroguard because we wanted to address pest issues without dangerous chemicals. I like that their products are eco-friendly and safe for the family. Their prices are affordable and they are reliable. Certain times of the year, like in the spring, the ants tend to show up more readily and they will always come out and do an extra treatment if necessary. We have had no major issues with bugs since we hired this company. I would highly recommend them.
